The Homekey 1 Edes project transformed the former Comfort Inn, a short-term hotel originally built in 1998, into 104 units of permanent affordable housing through funding from the State of California’s Homekey Initiative. The completed redevelopment included 102 affordable sleeping units and 2 manager’s units, helping address Oakland’s critical need for stable housing.
As part of the conversion, a communal kitchen was added to comply with the City of Oakland’s Municipal Code requirements for permanent housing. Significant accessibility upgrades were completed to meet ADA Standards, along with building and system improvements to ensure the property was safe, fully operational, and ready to provide a secure and sustainable living environment for residents.
This redevelopment became an important component of Oakland’s efforts to combat homelessness, converting an underutilized hotel into long-term supportive housing for formerly homeless individuals and families. The use of Homekey funding helped create much-needed affordable housing and further supported Oakland’s commitment to providing safe, stable housing for vulnerable populations.
