835 Turk

835 Turk Street is a seven-story residential hotel built in 1928 in San Francisco’s Western Addition, now being transformed into permanent supportive housing (PSH) for homeless and formerly homeless veterans, operated by Five Keys Schools & Programs.
Scope Highlights:
-
Convert ground-floor parking into offices, laundry, and resident service spaces
-
Renovate the manager’s unit and shared kitchen/dining/lounge to meet ADA standards
-
Combine two SRO units per floor into mobility-accessible studios and add trash chutes
-
Upgrade life-safety, seismic, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems
-
Add structural bracing and a new accessible exit at Elm Street
Adapting a nearly century-old concrete and steel building to modern residential standards required strategic sequencing and system integration. Accessibility retrofits, life-safety and seismic upgrades, and converting parking to active service areas demanded creative design and close coordination to minimize disruption while preserving the building’s historic fabric. The project creates safe, supportive homes with on-site services to help veterans achieve long-term stability.
