Apollo Hotel

The Apollo Hotel project rehabilitated a historic four-story Single Room Occupancy (SRO) building in San Francisco’s Mission District to support formerly homeless and very low-income adults under the ownership of Mission Housing Development Corporation (MHDC). Originally built in 1908 in the Classical Revival style, the structure features stucco cladding, wood framing, and sculpted bay windows on its upper floors.
Key elements of the renovation included:
- Interior rehabilitation of all existing toilet rooms, shower rooms, and communal kitchens; selective upgrades in residential units to meet current standards
- Addition and refurbishment of ADA-compliant bathrooms to ensure universal access
- Replacement of the fire alarm panel, upgrades to lighting systems, and improvements to building systems for safety and code compliance
- Exterior work including repair and replacement of wood siding and windows, and upgrades to the pedestrian roof deck and roof membrane
This adaptive rehab preserves architectural character while ensuring the building meets modern accessibility, safety, and system standards — all to provide stable, dignified housing in a transit-rich, urban corridor.
